2027 Ford Fathom: What We Know About Ford’s Upcoming Affordable EV Pickup  

Naming a new vehicle is a serious business, especially one designed to redefine how capable and affordable an electric pickup truck can be. While Ford still isn’t saying too much about its forthcoming compact EV pickup, due in dealers late 2027, it has revealed that the vehicle – its first of a newly-developed “Universal” platform – will be known as the Ford Fathom.  

There are two definitions of the word Fathom. As a noun, it is “unit of length equal to six feet, used chiefly in measuring the depth of water.” It is also an “archaic the span of a person’s outstretched arms.” The word is also a verb, meaning “to measure the depth of; to sound” and “to penetrate and come to understand.” 

However, the Fathom will be a mid-size, unibody pickup truck built on the Universal platform that will be developed for other vehicle types in the next several years. As the first vehicle built on this platform, it is tentatively slated to arrive at Stivers Ford of Montgomery in late 2027. Pre-orders will be available starting in early 2027 with a starting MSRP of $28,350 for a standard range battery version.  

The Fathom electric pickup truck will offer expansive cab space for five occupants in the SuperCrew configuration. The technology package will include a large, high-resolution touchscreen, bidirectional power capability, a digital key, smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and BlueCruise hands-free driver assistance technology. It will also be practical, thanks to a “frunk” and bed designed for added cargo flexibility.  

With these credentials, it may be ready run “run silent (and) run deep.” A spokesperson for Ford states, “What communicates depth below the surface? How do we communicate an emotional feeling of a vehicle that’s more than it appears to be?” Taking these ideas, along with feedback from potential customers, Ford went ahead and named this upcoming electric mid-size pickup truck the Fathom.  

The Fathom will join the widest variety of pickup truck available in the U.S.A. Ranging from the compact Maverick to the F-Series Super Duty lineup, there will be a “built tough” pickup truck for you. The Fathom will fit in as a capable battery-electric vehicle at an affordable price, delivering great value overall.  

Also, the Fathom will become the newest battery-electric vehicle, next to the F-150 Lightning. The drive system will be a next generation set of motors and batteries built on a common platform, while taking the experience of Ford’s EV lineup.
