2026 Ford Explorer vs the Competition

2026 Ford Explorer vs the Competition

The proven 2026 Ford Explorer has been a favorite among a wide range of customers. From families to public safety departments, businesses to governments – the Explorer is a durable three-row mid-size SUV that offers livable space, great performance options, and a range of trims.

The 2026 Explorer has moved the bar in its segment, offering new technology, connectivity, and innovative solutions for the family. Today, the 2026 Explorer adds a variety of models designed for your lifestyle, including the new Tremor, made for off-road adventure.

The Explorer is powered by a 300-horsepower 2.53-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine or one of two 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6s, available in 385 and 400-horsepower High Output versions. All engines are connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission, and you have a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. You can also opt for Blue Cruise to make driving more relaxing while keeping you safe on the highway. It is available in Active, Platinum, Tremor, ST-Line, and ST trim levels.

How well does the 2026 Ford Explorer compete against the competition?

2026 Ford Explorer vs Toyota Grand Highlander

The Toyota Grand Highlander is the brand’s go-to three-row SUV. It is also a response to the growing list of three-row crossover SUVs that have the ride and feel of cars and the utility of SUVs. The Grand Highlander offers customers a mix of both gasoline and hybrid engines, including the turbocharged Hybrid MAX. There is also a choice of 10 trim levels.

  • While the Grand Highlander has a wide range of power choices, the Explorer still comes out on top. The standard engine on the Ford is rated at 300 horsepower. The highest-powered Toyota still does not match either EcoBoost V6 engine in horsepower.
  • Ford offers BlueCruise on the Explorer. This enables the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel – with their eyes focused on the road – as the vehicle cruises miles of compatible roads. Toyota does not offer a similar feature on its Grand Highlander.
  • As a Toyota, one might assume the Grand Highlander would be offered in a rugged trim level that showcases its capabilities. The Explorer does, and it’s called the Tremor. Not only does it have rugged good looks, but it also offers enhanced capabilities that can take it off the highway.
  • One thing that attracts customers to the Explorer is its sporty, performance-oriented trims. The ST and its 400-horsepower EcoBoost V6 are made for enthusiasts who like to have some fun, with its practicality and three-row seating. The Grand Highlander does not offer such a trim level.
  • Great value goes a long way. The Explorer Active has an MSRP that is around $3,800 lower than the comparable Grand Highlander.

2026 Ford Explorer vs Jeep Grand Cherokee L

With a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, Jeep’s mid-size three-row SUV has been revised with a few new details. It remains one of the choices in this segment, thanks to its spacious cargo area and the inherent agility expected from a Jeep. The Grand Cherokee L comes with either a turbocharged four-cylinder or a V6 engine, along with a choice of rear- or four-wheel drive, across six trim levels.

  • The Grand Cherokee L has a couple of power choices; the Explorer still comes out on top. Both of the EcoBoost V6 engines offer more performance than any of the engines available on Jeep’s three-row SUV.
  • As a Jeep, one may assume that the Grand Cherokee L would be offered in a rugged trim level that exploits its capabilities.
The Grand Cherokee L does not offer such a trim level as it did in previous generations.
  • Comparing both turbocharged four-cylinder engines, the Explorer returns better fuel economy than the Grand Cherokee L. In fact, the Explorer with two-wheel drive returns a rated 29 MPG on the highway, compared to the 26 MPG on the Jeep. With four-wheel drive, the Explorer gets a rated 27 MPG on the highway, compared to the Grand Cherokee L’s rated 25 MPG.
  • Great value goes a long way. The Explorer Active has an MSRP that is around $1,500 lower than the comparable Grand Cherokee L.

2026 Ford Explorer vs Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride is all-new for 2027. It now comes in either a 274-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged engine or a 329-horsepower turbocharged hybrid driveline. It can be configured in either front- or all-wheel drive and can seat up to eight passengers. You also have a choice of ten trim levels.

  • While the Telluride has a couple of power choices, the Explorer still comes out on top. The standard engine on the Ford is rated at 300 horsepower. The highest-powered Kia still does not match either of the EcoBoost V6s in horsepower.
  • One thing that attracts customers to the Explorer is its sporty, performance-oriented trims. The ST and its 400-horsepower EcoBoost V6 are made for enthusiasts who like to have some fun, with its practicality and three-row seating. The Telluride does not offer such a trim level.
  • Comparing both turbocharged four-cylinder engines, the Explorer returns better fuel economy than the Telluride. 2026 Ford Explorer vs Chevrolet Traverse

Chevrolet is the leader in this segment. It is built on the full-sized pickup truck platform but features an independent rear suspension. The standard engine on most Traverse models is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that drives either the front or all four wheels. It is also available in four trim levels.

  • The Chevrolet has only one turbocharged power source. You do have a few choices on the Explorer, including two EcoBoost V6 engines with more horsepower than the Traverse’s only engine.
  • One thing that attracts customers to the Explorer is its sporty, performance-oriented trims. The ST and its 400-horsepower EcoBoost V6 are made for enthusiasts who like to have some fun, with its practicality and three-row seating.
