The Ford Head-Up Display was built for exactly that problem, and the way it solves it is smarter than most people realize. It doesn’t just put numbers on the glass. It focuses the projected image roughly seven feet out, near the end of the hood, so your eyes barely have to refocus at all. You’re not shifting from road distance to dashboard distance and back. You’re glancing at something that already lives out where you’re looking.

What Is the Ford Head-Up Display and Why It Matters for Safety

The Ford Head-Up Display projects key driving data onto the windshield, right where you’re already looking. The projection is organized into distinct zones rather than a single blob of numbers:

• Speedometer area: Current speed, the posted speed limit when the map database has it, and your transmission gear.
• Navigation area: Next-turn instructions.
• ADAS area: Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping status and warnings.
• Signaling and traffic: Turn indicators, blind spot information when your indicators are active, and cross traffic alert.
• Left information group: Incoming call information.
• Status bar: Distance to empty, time, and outside temperature. The fuel readout turns yellow when you’re low.

Speed and navigation stay put. The status bar is the piece you can switch off if you want a cleaner view.

Which 2026 Ford Models Offer a Head-Up Display

For 2026, Ford offers a Head-Up Display on three models: the Escape, the F-150, and the Super Duty. On two of them you can get it standard without optioning anything, and on the rest it’s an available add-on tied to specific equipment groups.

2026 Ford Escape

HUD is optional on the Platinum, Plug-in Hybrid, and ST-Line Elite trims. It isn’t offered further down the lineup, so if the display matters to you, those three are where to start looking.

2026 Ford F-150

The F-150 is the only truck in the lineup where you can get HUD as standard equipment. It comes standard on Platinum High (702A) and Platinum Plus (703A).

From there it’s optional, and the equipment group is what matters, not just the trim name. HUD is available on Tremor High (402A), Lariat High (502A), and King Ranch High (601A). Ordering a Lariat doesn’t get you a HUD by itself. Ordering a Lariat with the 502A group does.

2026 Ford Super Duty

HUD is standard across all three Platinum configurations: F-250 Platinum, F-350 Platinum, and F-450 Platinum. It’s optional on the Lariat and King Ranch trims of all three, so an F-350 Lariat can have it, but only if it’s specced that way.

How to Turn On and Adjust HUD Brightness

To activate the HUD:

1\. Press the HUD button on the right side of the steering wheel.

2\. Use the directional pad to select the HUD Menu on the instrument display and press OK to turn it on.

Here’s the part most people don’t know: brightness adjusts itself. The HUD reads ambient light and scales the image accordingly, so you’re not meant to be chasing the sun with a manual setting. If the automatic level isn’t quite right for you, you can nudge it. Brightness is its own item in the HUD Menu, sitting alongside HUD On, HUD Adjustments, and HUD Content. Select it and follow the onscreen prompts.

One limitation worth knowing. Oncoming headlamps, sunrise, sunset, and reflections off wet pavement can all wash out the image. That’s the system working as designed, not a fault.

How to Adjust HUD Height and Viewing Position

Drivers come in all different heights, so Ford built in a way to adjust where the display sits:

1. Press the HUD button on the right side of the steering wheel.
2. The HUD Menu appears in your instrument cluster, not on the center screen. Use the arrow buttons and OK to select HUD Adjustments.
3. You get two controls here. Vertical Position moves the image up or down to match your height. Image Rotation tilts it, which is what you want if the display looks subtly off-axis rather than too high or too low.
4. Follow the onscreen prompts to confirm.

Take a few minutes when you first get behind the wheel to fine-tune this. Positioned correctly, the display feels like a natural extension of what you’re already looking at, rather than something you have to dip your eyes to read.

Ford built flexibility into the HUD so you can shape what appears based on your own driving habits.

Selecting Speed, Navigation, and Alert Data

To customize content:

1. The HUD Content menu is narrower than people expect, and that’s deliberate.
2. Press the HUD button on the steering wheel and select HUD Content. You get two things:  

    The status bar – Turn distance to empty, time, and outside temperature on or off as a group. This is your decluttering lever.  

    Cruise and Lane Control – Choose whether adaptive cruise and lane keeping status appear in the display.  

    That’s the full menu. Speed and navigation are not optional. They live in fixed display zones because they’re the reason the system exists. If you were hoping to strip the HUD down to just turn arrows, that isn’t a setting.

Most drivers keep speed visible at all times. Navigation prompts are useful when running Ford’s built-in navigation or a connected phone. Keep the display focused. Cramming too much onto it creates clutter and defeats the purpose.
